In honour of the 35th Anniversary of Canada's diplomatic relations with
Vietnam, Ambassador Lessard will offer his personal retrospective of the
many changes he has seen here along with his view of Vietnam's future.
>From his first assignment in Vietnam as a member of the International
Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) in January, 1973 to his current
posting as Canada's official representative in Hanoi, Ambassador Lessard's
responsibilities have spanned Canada's core international interests such as
peace and security, human rights, and development assistance.
The Ambassador has had a diverse diplomatic career covering areas such as
trade policy, personnel development, the United Nations, La Francophonie,
international assessment at the Privy Council Office, and political/economic
responsibilities for African and Middle Eastern countries. He also found
time to complete a three-year "tour of duty" with Canada's aluminum giant,
Alcan. He was previously Ambassador to Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sudan.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Université Laval, a Bachelor's
degree in political science and economics, a Masters degree in international
relations, and also attended the Executive Program of the London Graduate
School of Business Studies.
