Dear anh Shane & CACC,
Very good logic, anh Shane.
But I would never say "never" :-) Or to change slightly, I would never say
"forever," like Hoang Sa (Paracels) is lost to China forever. World
politics changes. You never know what may come your way if you continue
your claim and don't give it up.
* First, I would not count on China's stability on the long run. "Chua mot
cot" (the one-column temple) is nice to look at, but it can house only one
or two monks at most. You don't want to house your family in a "nha mot
cot" (one-column house), do you? One-column carries with it great
instability. Same thing with a one-party system. I really don't think that
China's leaders have to capacity to see this point, because their
civilization, up until this point, is nha mot cot. (But I do believe that
the Vietnamese leaders can grasp this point).
The world is moving at the Internet speed and the Chinese people will all
move at the Internet speed, and their leaders won't be able to catch up. I
can bet on a major upheaval in China within my lifetime. It could come as
early as 10 years from now.
When politics shift tremendously, new alliances form; all kinds of
negotiations and renegotations may be done if one is intelligent enough to
do it.
* Second, if Vietnam continues to grow strong economically, strength will
help in future negotiations. Muscles--economic, military, political,
brainpower--always help.
You never know what is in your future, so never give up. Be resolute, be
patient, be strong, and be ready. If you keep your faith long enough, the
time will come.
Have a great day!
Hoanh
