Vietnam <http://www.eetasia.com/SEARCH/ART/Vietnam.HTM> has launched its
first microchip—RISC SigmaK3—marking its entry in the
microchip<http://www.eetasia.com/SEARCH/ART/microchip.HTM>market.

This is according to a report from *Viet Nam News*, which stated that the
8bit chip was developed by researchers from the IC
Design<http://www.eetasia.com/CAT_480100_EDA-IC-design.HTM>,
Research and Education Centre (ICDREC) under the Ho Chi Minh City National
University, with a budget of about $125,000, half of which came from the
government.

ICDREC deputy director Ngo Duc Hoang disclosed that the the chip was built
using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd's 0.25µ technology. The
SigmaK3 <http://www.eetasia.com/SEARCH/ART/SigmaK3.HTM> is designed for
handheld electronic devices such as TV remote
controls<http://www.eetasia.com/ART_8800237672_590626_NT_6d7df16a.HTM>or
medical tools.

Experts see the microchip as proof of the country's ability to produce IP
cores <http://www.eetasia.com/ART_8800485655_499495_NP_8936af84.HTM>,
signaling a new stage for its electronics production.

The ICDREC plans to market its products under the ICDREC trademark while
doing further research on 16/32bit IP cores. The center targets to begin
using 0.13µ technology to catch up with the latest trends in technology.
