Shane:
Yes the cost is steep, and in know way do I represent them but for an
organization who trades on the data, even a university with thousands of
students, perhaps it's not too bad. ($5000 for 2000 students divided by 365
days is around 100 dong per head by my quick mental calculation). Frankly
the site is well worth it but then perhaps the content is a little too high
for most undergrads, and populations of researchers to small to make the
cost as cheap as I imply.
As to software, and despite lip-service to the opposite, I suspect that
creators/providers of software, mostly, are turning a blind eye to current
piracy in hope of future rents as nations develop while populations and
businesses are reared on their products. Of course there will be token
attempts to encourage large users, with steeply discounted licenses, to
register legal software and I should imagine that large FIC's must/do use
licensed software as part of being honest for protecting (presenting a
solid philosophical platform to protect) their own intellectual property.
You speak to more affordable solutions and I suspect at present they haven't
been able to figure out a way to do this effectively without cannibalizing
their products. In fact, companies like Microsoft do give alot of their
products away to organizations/educators/students around the world. The
link to the site that they use for this was lost many computers ago but I am
sure it is still existent. In fact, there were producers of refrigerators
and all sorts of products that do this; they do this cautiouslyas they want
to ensure it is going to intended recicipients.
I guess plain and simple, software is a product that is less tangible,
people like it, people want it, people need it,but if it can be purchased on
something as cheap as a low quality cd then it can't be worth much can it.
Large corporations can wait for rents, small players are inhibited by the
possible immorality of those who could pay but don't, and are unaffected by
those who would never be able to pay,but may benefit, assuming they can
survive, from people using it and being able to pay in the long run.
Were they to price by market, it might be that some large players would
undermine consumer belief in the value of this, largely, intangible product.
Back to RGE, remember that it is free for a few weeks, with some extra time
you can extract alot of good information if you so desire.
