Hi Craig and All CACC,
Thanks for the link Craig. As we all know "information is power".
Yes, the cost is very steep for the current economic situation in a
country like Vietnam. I think this is one of the MAJOR reasons why so
much piracy occurs here, especially with software. I am the only
authorized trainer in Vietnam for a Computer Aided Translation software
tool called Wordfast (www.wordfast.net). The owner of this software has
recognized that translators in developing countries simply cannot pay
the same price as those in developed countries. Wordfast has instituted
a sales model whereby if your payment to them comes from a developing
country, you get your license for 50% of the developed country rate.
The big victims of software piracy must have thought of a model like
this and rejected it for some reason ... or have they? Wouldn't it make
more sense to "the bottom line" to spread the penetration of legal
software usage by reducing the cost to an affordable price in developing
countries? I'm no accountant, but even just 20-30% of your 'full-price'
for legal software MUST be better than the 100% you lose through piracy!
Does anybody know or have any factual insight into why legal software
is still so expensive (relative to the economic situation of the
country) in Vietnam?
Shane
