Publishing House released "Xuan thi" (Spring Time) today, a collection of 71
nude photos by Thai Phien. This is the first time Vietnam has published a
nude photo book.*

The bilingual, Vietnam-English book is a collection of nude photos taken
over the past 15 years by Thai Phien as well as 20 articles written by the
photographer about his career.
The book was released without a gaudy celebration or launching ceremony;
instead appearing quietly, in the spirit of the photographer. Thai Phien is
happy to publish his book but doesn't hide his melancholy: "My passion for
nude art urges me to venture, despite unexpected misfortune which can fall
on my head anytime. I'm a follower and silent appreciator of the beauty of
soul and body that the Creator grants to women. I'm a love-bird, who devotes
himself to honoring that beauty…"
Spring Time is distributed by Fahasa and sells for VND170,000. It is now
available at the HCM City Photographers' Association bookshop at 122 Suong
Nguyet Anh, District 1, HCM City and Dien Dam Gallery, 4B Dinh Liet, Hoan
Kiem, Hanoi.
The Hanoi Department of Culture and Information licensed Thai Phien to
organize a nude photo exhibition in late November 2007, which was then
postponed to January 1, 2008.
Thai Phien hasn't yet received the Hanoi Department of Culture and
Information's extension license for a later show but says he will bring his
photos to Hanoi late this December to wait for the license.
This is the first nude photo exhibition to be licensed in Hanoi, in fact,
the whole country. Recently, the HCM City Department of Culture and
Information refused to grant him a license, reasoning that nude photos are
unsuitable to the customs and tradition of Vietnam.
Nude photos have been sparsely displayed in exhibitions and sent to photo
contests before but never win significant prizes.
Phien's licensing is considered an artistic victory.
