[Vnbiz] a few McCain achievements for Vietnam

Hi all,

My two cents are Americans will choose a president for themselves first and foremost. A leader should be elected base on his talent, capability, competence and intergrity....not his favorable issues/countries/people. That will be unfair for those countries McCain has no relationship/experience. That will make him not a balanced world leader.

If we (vietnamese) support McCain just b/c he supports VN..it sounds a little bit selfish of us. I hope Americans will be smarter in choosing a more competent prez this time to run the country. And remember, US govt is a system with checks and balance.. the president alone can't get policies implemented without its congress..No doubt McCAin is a friend to Vietnam, but I am not sure if he can do more good things for US-VN relations if the Congress is against him.

I have watched most political debates here in US. both McCain and Obama have their pros and cons in their ideology. In my opinion, McCain appears to be a realist leader. That means he wants U.S influence/presence around the world in every region in the long run. That's why he mentioned that he is willing to have US troops in Iraq for 100 years as they have been in other countries. With this mentality, he is not going to favor VN over China - another world superpower/rival, an an important voice on international arena. the U.S will continue competing with China, but it also needs China cooperation in many other international issues. Therefore, VN never be closed to be competitive with China from international perspective. I don;t mean to put down VN, but we should be realistic here. I am proud of being a Vietnamese, and all accomplisment VN has achieved in the past decade...and our leaders will be people who understand better than any of us about VN's position vs. China
in both bilateral and multilateral relations.

I don't see any of presidential candidates really oustanding than one another. each of them has their own strength and weakness. If I could vote, I would choose a person who can unite the Congress to have his good policy promisses done and pose less danger to the world.

  Peace,
  H

I admit I don't know everything. But I have read and certainly could find past articles to show these facts:

1. McCain worked hard to normalize relationship with Vietnam while many of his colleagues opposed.
2. McCain defended the importation of catfish for Vietnam . Vietnam has to go extra step to change the name catfish to basa . The amount of importation is not that big because Vietnam is not big country like China .
Any way, vietnamese in VN appreciated his effort .

McCain knows Vietnam more than anybody else, understand its need for independence, its defense and its quest for peace and economic prosperity .

That is something I know for sure. I also would like to know ANYBODY ELSE has done more than McCain for Vietnam.

Cheers,

Thang pham

Brothers and sisters

I have watched John Kerry and the Kennedy families trying to promote Obama.
The only thing I got is Obama was against the war in Iraq. Imagine Al queada just slammed two airplanes
into the twin buildings and killed 3000 peoples in a single day . At that time, he was not well known and his signature gets lost among many others in the vote to invade Iraq .
Now he comes out and claims a JACKPOT of opposing the invasion of Iraq.

Anh Hoanh and I , myself opposed the invasion from the beginning. We should come out and claim the Jackpot too.

Anyway, it is obvious now that Obama will win the democratic nomination now. As a vietnamese, we all knew McCain has been always the champion and has worked his heart out to bring peace and prosperity to Vietnam even after he has been tortured by the North Vietnamese for 5 years .

I am sure McCain will favor trade with Vietnam over China because he understands the strategic and economic position in Asia to help Vietnam to maintain peace and prosperity . Bush 's father did not make the mistake in Iraq as his son did due arrogance. It all boils down to experiences learned by the hard way . Based on FACTS, my democrat VOTE will go to McCain regardless of Clinton or Obama.

Dear Jackie,

I'm still working on a bit of a 6-month news-coverage summary of Obama, as time permits, under the now somewhat popular premise that the more people get to know Obama the more they like him.

But apropos your comment "that pollsters/pundits were wrong about Asians/Viet Americans being some sort of a monolithic Pro-Hillary 'bloc vote'", here's one fairly active site i found: http://www.asianamericansforobama.com/

Here's a Google search URL folks can use to find info about Vietnam or Vietnamese on that site:

  Dear all,
Thanks for much thoughtful discussion regarding our next US President.

I realize this list is Viet Nam-business-centric, but nevertheless, pleased to hear a variety of opinions regarding who the next USA Prez will be.
Especially enjoy hearing that pollsters/pundits were wrong about Asians/Viet Americans being some sort of a monolithic Pro-Hillary 'bloc vote'.

We are a diverse group and never short of opinions :-)

Hope to hear more of your opinions (overseas, ex-pats, and non AMericans too!) and experiences in the year to come.

  Jackie (N. Carolina, USA)
