"I really enjoyed my summer teaching for ViSTA. It allowed me to meet a lot of interesting people and experience the culture of Vietnam in more depth than had I merely gone as a tourist. The students were generally eager to befriend us, and they would take us around sightseeing, shopping, and to different cafes. They’re generally good kids, if somewhat reluctant to speak up in class and to complete homework during the summer. From them, I got to know a lot more about education and other aspects of Vietnam. You also meet other ViSTA teachers and IVCE people, so you acquire new friends to travel with and get more ideas of what to do while you’re there".

      Vivian Bui, Yale University.
      ViSTA Fellow 2007.

"Although I've been to Vietnam numerous times, nothing have enlightened and changed my perspective about Vietnam more than the TOEFL teaching assistantship. The program gave allowed me to give something back to my country by giving me the opportunity to help my peers in their strife to succeed with their educational aspirations. In addition, interacting with the students enriched my understanding about Vietnam by enlightening me both socially and culturally".

      Thy Phan, UC Irvine
      ViSTA Fellow 2007.

"The TOEFL teaching assistantship was an amazing experience for me. Not only did it enlighten me culturally, it allowed me to see the universal importance of education, and ability to do something to contribute to the Vietnamese community. Overall, It was very enlightening to work with and help such smart individuals pursue their goals to broaden their education".

      Kim Tran, UC San Diego.
      ViSTA Fellow 2007.

IVCE would like to announce the call for applications for our summer educational program: Vietnam Summer Teaching Assistantship (ViSTA). Since 2000, IVCE has delivered a "Study Abroad in America" conference every summer to help students in Vietnam pursue higher education abroad. The goal of this conference is to provide information about the admission and testing processes in addition to scholarships offered for study in the United States. We also aimed to provide students with tools to improve their chances of gaining admission and securing financial aid.

According to the Institute of International Education, 18,400 Vietnamese students attended U.S. colleges and high schools from 2000-2006, about 13,000 undergraduates, 4,500 graduates, and 900 others. IVCE has a long-term goal of increasing the total number of Vietnamese students to between 30 and 50 thousand in ten years (2005-2015). To achieve this goal, IVCE has conducted 21 study-abroad seminars since 2002 and has offered individual assistance with application materials. We have also set up partnerships with and maintained a collection of study abroad materials at each of the following institutions: Vietnam National University - Hanoi, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang Institute of Technology, Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh, Ho Chi Minh Institute of Technology, and Can Tho University.

We believe students who have the opportunity to study abroad will bring back with them ideas and concepts from American universities that can contribute to the development of Vietnam.

The ViSTA program is the companion to our “Study Abroad in America” summer conference series. Through ViSTA, IVCE actively recruits and develops a group of Vietnamese-American college and graduate students to teach TOEFL, SAT, GRE & GMAT workshops to students this summer in Vietnam. In previous years, this group has hailed from schools such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia and UPenn. IVCE continually looks to expand this program to college undergraduate and graduate students from all schools in the United States.

Please be advised that as a participant in ViSTA, you are expected to fundraise money for your own roundtrip travel and other related expenses for the 8-week stay in Vietnam. Past participants have been able to get past this hurdle by applying to grants or fellowships offered by their respective universities. IVCE’s role in this program is one of guidance, coordination and training. We will organize all the logistics for your travel and stay as a group in Vietnam

Outside of your teaching responsibility, you will have the time and independence to explore Vietnam as it interests you. Although we encourage travel as a group, we understand that you might have personal research projects or independent studies to engage with. IVCE will gladly serve as a point of contact and support for all your endeavors in Vietnam.

IVCE calls for the participation of any student who wants to experience Vietnam first-hand and to contribute toward its educational development. Please respect the April 15th deadline, as we might be unable to arrange accommodations for you after that date. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns at nhipsong at ivce.org. You can also check us out at www.ivce.org. We look forward to your participation in ViSTA this coming summer.
