Vietnam to import 100,000 ton of raw cashew from Indonesia and Africa
Hanoi (ANTARA News) - Vietnam, the world's top cashew exporter, is projected
to import between 50,000 tonnes and 100,000 tonnes of raw nuts by year end
from Africa and Indonesia for processing, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The plan could bring total raw cashew import this year to 250,000 tonnes, as
domestic processors have capacity to process 550,000 tonnes but they could
only buy 350,000 tonnes from farmers this year, the agency said in a report
on Sunday.
Vietnam, which surpassed India last year to become the world's top cashew
exporter, would ship 135,000 tonnes to 140,000 tonnes of shelled cashew this
year, up 6.5 percent from last year, the report quoted a Vietnam Cashew
Association
official as saying.
About 4.5 to 5 tonnes of raw nuts are used to produce a tonne of shelled
nuts.
But domestic supply has fallen behind the fast-expanding processing capacity
as farmers in key growing provinces have switched to growing rubber in the
past several years, industry officials said.
Vietnam buys raw cashew from Cambodia, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, South Africa
and Indonesia for processing.
It exports 97 percent of output, 40 percent of which goes to the U.S.
market, 20 percent to China, 20 percent to EU nations and the rest to
Russia, Japan and the Middle East. (*)
