FYI
ItÂ’s time to celebrate International WomenÂ’s Day and
this yearÂ’s theme is Ending Impunity for Violence
Against Women. As we mark this day, let us seek to
transform relationships away from all forms of
violence and discrimination. We share key reports and
resources on the subject...

ItÂ’s In Our Hands: Stop Violence Against Women
“I really don’t know what it was that evening that
made me decide to call the police, but I always say it
was the sight of cleaning up my own blood.”-Lorrain, a
British woman, was regularly beaten by her partner for
eight years before telling anyone.
Breaking new ground in the work of Amnesty
International, this report investigates causes, forms
and remedies, and highlights the responsibility of the
state, the community and individuals for taking action
to end violence against women.
The UN Secretary-GeneralÂ’s In-Depth Study on All Forms
of Violence Against Women

“Violence against women has yet to receive the
priority attention and resources needed at all levels
to tackle it with seriousness and visibility”
Secretary-General’s in –depth study on violence
against women (2006)
This report by UNÂ’s Secretary-General was launched
October 9 2006. It discusses the roles and
responsibilities of various sectors in ending violence
against women. See:

Ending Violence Against Women
An initiative of UNFPA, this interactive, multimedia
online exhibit tells the stories of women throughout
the world in their battle to bring equality and stop
violence to women, as well as the efforts of the UNFPA
and other like-minded NGOs in these endeavors.

Events
The 51st Session of the UN Commission on the Status of
Women

years, women's company Aurora has again opened the
website as a directory of all IWD events across
countries. It currently links 256 websites and 207 IWD

The State of the WorldÂ’s Children 2007: Women and
Children; The Double Dividend of Gender Equality:
A report by UNICEF examines the discrimination and
disempowerment women face throughout their lives – and
outlines what must be done to eliminate gender
discrimination and empower women and girls. It looks
at the status of women today, discusses how gender
equality will move all the Millennium Development
Goals forward, and shows how investment in womenÂ’s
rights will ultimately produce a double dividend:
advancing the rights of both women and children.
