Craig,

Spring or fall clothing of Washington DC would be good for cold weather in
Hanoi (December, January, February). But remember, we are buying
made-in-Vietnam shoes and clothing in US fashion stores. (I have seen some
made-in-Vietnam clothing with high-fashion US designer names, really
beautiful). So you may want to bring nothing, and just buy fashionable
clothes at a very reasonable price in Vietnam. Makes your travel more
pleasant.

Hanoians are more formal, less direct and more polished in speaking; they
talk like career diplomats, and chances are many things they say in a
conversation will escape you (Not only you, even me. More often than not, I
realize after a conversation with a Hanoian that I have missed quite a bit
of what s/he wanted to tell me). So listen carefully in conversation, and
if the meaning is not absolutely clear to you, just say, "I am not sure I
understand you correctly. You want me to do this...this..., correct?" (I
do that too. More than once I have said, "Sorry, I grew up in the South and
then in the US; I am not able to capture all the subtleties in the way you
talk. I won't understand a lot of figurative language either. You just
have to be simple and direct with me. Talk to me they way you would talk to
a kid. And I won't be offended. I would very much appreciate that").

Great day, Craig.

Hoanh
