"Bits 'n' Pieces" from Graham Potter:
Random personal notes from the "Editor" . . .
Well, here's a small bit of added info to start the New Year---but in our
next issue we'll have everything updated, including the Hash House Harriers
listing, Thunderbirds listing, Saigon Yoga listing, etc.: that is, all those
listings which are out-of-date now! I promise! New Year's Resolution No.
1!
_____
Did Pacharan start a new trend? Now we're looking forward to Arache
Sahrai's plan for another imminent serving of tapas, at Cantina Central
---from about January 15.
_____
Feel like a good, healthy introduction to a special branch (no pun
intended!) of yoga? From January 15-20 Saigon Yoga hosts Ashtanga ("8
limbs" of breathing and movement) Workshops with Clayton Horton---an
Authorized Ashtanga teacher visiting from the Yoga Tree is San Francisco.

_____
I received a highly intrusive---oops! I meant to say, important---SMS
announcement a few days ago! A genuine Pizza Hut (as in Deep Dish, Stuffed
Crust, etc.) in Diamond Plaza (4th Level)! Just (please!) put a Tim
Horton's donut shop beside it and I'll move there tomorrow!
_____
Staying on food, the luxury Pasteur Court apartments in District 3 will open
"soon" but maybe its two-floor Cafe Central Pasteur to open first---then
I'll be able to choose between bagels and cream cheese and New York
cheesecake at Cafe Central, and sizzling fajitas and pumpkin cheese cake
across the street at Texas Bar-B-Q. All it really means is that I'll add
even more kilograms while I enjoy both! Soon it'll be double trouble only 2
minutes from my office!
_____
Well, let's finish with more New Year's Resolutions, these ones a measure of
the New Vietnam, perhaps: Courtesy of ACNielsen, it has recently been
determined that, "With one of the worlds highest consumer confidence
indexes (116 against an average of 99 globally) . . . Vietnamese are also
keen on making some life changes in 2007. . . . Vietnamese [have] confirmed
[their] New Years resolutions (for 93% of online respondents). But when it
gets to stick to them, thats another story: 57% claim they will keep all of
their resolutions (and men seem more determined than ladies in that case:
61% against 50%).
In any case, the top 3 resolutions for 2007 are: 1. Achieving better
work/life balance: 84% 2. Exercise more: 63% 3. Spend more time with
family : 54%."
Well, they all sound good to me! Check with me on December 31, 2007 for my
own personal results, please!

Saturday, February 17, 2007
("Tet" 'eve' is Friday, February 16)
"Tet" (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) begins This will be the Year of the Pig.
(Oink! It's the end of the 12-year cycle, too.) "People born in the Year of
the Pig (1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007) are described
as kind, trustworthy and dependable, with a love of luxurious things." [And
they're quite compatible with people born in the Year of the Dog, I'm
pleased to note.]
"A person born in the year of the Pig is likely to be a good parent. Maybe
easy to anger, but also intelligent, honest, courageous, completes projects,
gallant, and sincere. People born in these years are honest and
straightforward. They can be relied on to see things through. They tend to
be popular, make lasting friendships and are good neighbors. Perhaps this
is not an ordinary pig year, which comes every 12 years---it is believed by
some to be the "Year of the Golden Pig," which comes every 600 years,
according to fortunetellers. They say babies born in the golden pig year
will have comfortable and wealthy lives."
All Lunar New Years are not created equal! Astute readers of Upcoming
Events, eh?! will have noticed that for some time I incorrectly listed Tet
Eve as February 17 and the first day of Tet as February 18. But John Barnes
of <http://www.SaigonToday.net> www.SaigonToday.net found out this was
wrong---because of Time Zone differences, Winter Solstice differences, Leap
Months, etc., the Vietnamese and Chinese Lunar New Years sometimes are
different. In fact, " . . . in 1985 the Vietnamese New Year was 1 month
earlier than the Chinese one. In the 21st century there are 3 years where
the Lunar New Year begins at different dates in Vietnam and in China. In
2007 the Vietnamese New Year is on 17/02/2007, the Chinese one on
18/02/2007. In 2030 the dates are 02/02/2030 and 03/02/2030, and in 2053
they are 18/02/2053 and 19/02/2053."
Complete (and I mean complete!) information about Lunar Calendars, including
the fact that the Vietnamese calendar is not a pure lunar one, but a
lunisolar calendar ("am duong lich") has been compiled by Ho Ngoc Duc, PhD,
who lives in Berlin. His fascinating bilingual website, from which I have
borrowed some of the preceding details, is at
http://www.informatik.uni-leipzig.de/~duc/amlich/vncal_en.html .

now does meet the publishers' promise: more and more interesting!

beach or other excursions as well as for fending off urban traffic! Now
located in Mui Ne, maybe it'll be moved to Saigon soon! (The photo of the
Jeep I have shows daughter and grandmother too, but they're not part of the
