Dear Brother Nhon & CACC,
Doing business locally or globally has more with size than with culture or
mentality. When you start out very small, generally you will have to do
business locally. When you become big, your
"locality" becomes big and the globe becomes your locality.
Most businesses in Vietnam are very small. They can't go global. But as
they grow, we will see them start to do work globally. Many Vietnamese food
companies export to many countries now.
Of course, the mentality to expand globally also plays some role in the
global v. local issue. But the first determining factor is size. Internet
will change some of this by helping some local companies do selling
worldwide. Many Vietnamese hotels are doing that.
About family business, actually the best way to start a company is doing it
with your family members (if you don't fight). The family always the best
group of core people for your organization. Look at the Fords, the
Budweisers, the Pabsts, the Kennedys, the Bushes, the Rockerfllers,
etc...). Most giant companies started out as family business and later went
public to allow outside stock ownership. We will explore this some time
when I have more time.
