Vietnam workplace accidents
up 38.7% from last year

HANOI: Vietnam has reported nearly 3,000 workplace accidents since the
beginning of this year, up 38.7 percent over the same period last year,
local newspaper Vietnam News reported Tuesday.

The situation was attributed to poor awareness of local workers about labor
safety, bad working conditions, and loose labor safety-related inspection of
relevant state agencies.

The country is forecast to see 120,000 to 130,000 workplace accidents from
now to 2010. The accidents are predicted to kill 1,200 people, and cause
property losses of one trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (nearly $6.3 million).

Vietnam is expected to have 500,000 firms in 2010, 95 percent of which are
small-and medium-sized ones with total workforce of some 56 million.

Vietnam reported 5,881 workplace accidents in 2006, up 31.1 percent over
2005. The accidents killed 536 people, seriously injured 1,142 others, and
caused property losses of nearly 3.9 trillion VND (nearly $243.8 million).
