Dear chi Nhung and CACC,

Though not surprised with the sealed-mouth situation of the press in Viet
Nam, I was badly hurt to hear about this seizure over Vietnamnet. Hoang Sa
(the Spratlys) and Truong Sa (the Paracels) suddenly become a much more
sensitive topic than ever before. No doubt there is no report at all
about the two islands on Vietnamese newspapers these days.

But if you go around some personal blogs and discussion forums, you can
really feel a fiery protest against China and everything related. My friend
just forwarded to me this wiki page (means it's open to public editting)
which discusses a top list of Chinese goods that should be rejected

people have made hundreds of T-shirts and stickers against China. There are
also several planning peaceful demonstrations in Hanoi, HCMc, NYC,
Frankfurt, Paris... Who knows if those spontaneous reactions may lead to
some bigger campaigns, or even a war

Whatever may happen, I agree with Prof. Vu Tuong (University of California)
(see his statement below) that the right of the Vietnamese people to some
certain truths and freedom of speech regarding this issue should
be respected. The people should not be blinded.

Dù chúng ta không nên phóng đại vấn đề Hoàng Sa và Trường Sa, nhưng chính
phủ Việt Nam không nên và không có quyền cấm đoán dân chúng biểu tình hay
giấu giếm thông tin về quan hệ Việt -Trung. Đây là những quyền được đảm bảo
trong Hiến pháp Việt Nam. Những người Việt quan tâm đến vấn đề này (có những
người không quan tâm) phải được quyền thảo luận tự do và chất vấn các đại
biểu Quốc hội của họ, hay biểu tình để Trung Quốc không coi thường Việt Nam.
Chính phủ Việt Nam nên tổ chức các cuộc hội thảo nghiêm túc trong giới
nghiên cứu và các trường đại học, và các ý kiến khác nhau cần phải được
khuyến khích. Chính sách hiện nay của Việt Nam có vẻ đề cao quá mức việc duy
trì mối quan hệ hữu hảo đối với Trung Quốc, nhưng thiếu cảnh giác trước nguy
cơ lệ thuộc. Sau suốt một thập kỷ chiến tranh dai dẳng với Trung Quốc, chính
sách hiện nay của Việt Nam với Trung Quốc rất khó hiểu. Cũng có thể đây là
chính sách khôn ngoan, nhưng nhân dân Việt Nam cần được giải thích rõ ràng
tại sao như vậy, vì họ đã và sẽ phải trả giá cho những quyết định thiếu khôn
ngoan bằng chính xương máu của họ.
