[Vnbiz] I am going to Cambridge!

Dear sister Thanh An,

It is very nice to hear that things are OK with you and that you have settled very well out there. Congratulations!

Please be advised that I previously worked for British Petroleum Exploration- State Oil Alliance Operating Company (BPX VN) for almost 7 years. But unfortunately, I missed two chances (the two training courses to be in Sunbury, London -very near the Heathrow airport and the other one in Peter Head, Aberdeen) to go to the UK due to the off-shore rigs operations.

I have heard a number of stories about the English, Scottish, and British people, "the Southern softies" and the "Scottish people are tight" "myths", etc... You are now being there so you shall have got opportunities to know and understand so much more things about the GB than I do. You are very lucky.

Keep us posted with what are going on there, please.

Dao Xuan Lam

Dear Anh Hoanh, Chi Phuong, Chi Anh, A.Duyen, A.Craig, A.Toan, A. Nhon, Le Thu`y, Thu Thuy, cac em Romi, Phuc, Hai and many other dear VNBIZ brothers/sisters,

Let me firstly express my heartiest thanks to all your kind words of encouragement to me on this new adventure.

My quickly-rushing first week in Cambridge has been a mixture of emotions and an interestingly-divided load of various settle-down businesses, classroom duties and quite a few other social programmes. Still a lot more to be done before I could claim to be fully settled, but by far things are more or less under control J.

In my EAP class, which is a 5-week pre-course class before the full term really begins, I am the only person from Vietnam. There are amazingly two big groups of Chinese and Japanese students besides students from about a dozen of other countries in Europe (both Eastern and Western Europe), Middle East and Latin America and Africa. Believe it or not, one of my classmates from Iran do not know where Vietnam is on the world map, and this reminds me of how unpopular Vietnam could be in the present world history !? J. I do hope at least now as they get to know the first Vietnamese in their life, they would not ask the same question the next time they see another person from Vietnam.

In terms of some initial impressions with the place, departing from the noisy and busy Hanoi, Cambridge to me seems just another world with its incredible serene atmosphere where the charm and beauty of old castles, historic monuments match so well with the romance of the river Cam and the seemingly quite slow pace of the life here compared with many other Western cities and the popular courtesy of the local English people.

I have just started to discover a few out of the 31 colleges behind the long-standing fame of the University of Cambridge and somehow already been overwhelmed by what I have seen and heard about them. Anyway, I hope to explore more in the next weeks and months, so that I could at least be not too bad a tour guide just in case some of you decide to drop by this lovely town J.

That's it for now. Will revert at another point in time.

  With best regards,

  Thanh An

  Dear CACC,

Just so you know that I have decided to leave my job for a whilst to restart my academic life in the University of Cambridge. I am now already in the Hong Kong Airport waiting to board the next flight to London.

If some of you happen to cross by Cambridge, please do let me know, we might have a small vnbiz gathering there J !

  All the best,

  Thanh AN
