[Vnbiz] Leadership -- A little more on Honesty

Hello all,

We are discussing more about how characteristics of leader should be. I just want to share with you the book that I have read recently "The Bible on Leadership", Vietnamese version from Alpha-Book: "Kinh Thánh về nghệ thuật Lãnh Đạo".

  I don't think there's a consensus agreement among the posters in this Debate; therefore, I'll give answer about myself and what I had posted only.  

  Dear Toan, truthfully, all my life, up to this very minute, I have been surrounded by numerous of great role models of my elders in my family (my maternal grandfather, my mother, my parent-in-law), who leaded their families by examples with such generosities, integrity and virtues, and who inspired me to live my life the way I should, I simply would not dare to do it any other way.  

  To be honest, it always have been a life long learning process, and a never ending battle with my conscience, but because of the love and respect I had for them, for my children, and the compassion I had for others, it gave me the will to go on seeking for goodness.  

  When I was younger, I did not fully understood the significant of the lessons my grandfather and my mother tried to teach me (I had my days of being stubborn and rebellious), I merely obeyed them for fear of being spanking.  Now  the older I get, the more I recognized how fortunate I was to have them in my life, to guided me and to make me the person I'm - to be loving - to be generous - to be forgiving - to be humane - to be loyal - to be honest - to be considerate - to be compassionate - to be dignified - so that I could be a better person to serve myself, my family, and my fellow human beings better.   

  Trust me, I had more than my share of suffering from prejudices, cruelty, betrayal, disloyal, dishonest, human lust & greed, inhumane, deceitfulness and inconsiderateness from people of all corners throughout my life.  But I always remembered what my grandfather told me; if I want to better my life and my children's lives, it has to start with me, do not be victimize but continued to seek for goodness and greatness.  They existed everywhere in this world, and when I found them I had to bring them out from their hidden places. 

  No doubt this is a brutal world we live in, but I've come to look at the glass is half full, Toan.  Maybe it's just for the moments, but it's there, it's in the unconditional love of my children/grand children's eyes every time they see me,  it's in the uncapturable scent of a lotus flower, it's in the innocent smile of a child, it's in the sacrificed of so many people so that my family and I could enjoyed a good life, it's in my mother in law's happiest smile & the ever so tighten handheld the first time she saw my face in the hospital when she tried to tell me that she missed me, it's in my Mother's day's cards contained the words of my daughters' handwriting..  "Your undying love, unconditional support and endless generosity have helped me become who I am today" - "There are lessons that a mother gives as you start out on your own, examples that she's shown by the way she loves and lives...", it's in the well being of other children when I could provide foods on their table and sent them to school.  It is very important for me to find those special moments everyday and count my blessings, and be thank full for them.  

  At the moment, my only interest is to continue to learn how to better myself everyday so that I can serve my family better.  Until then, I don't believe I'm qualify to be any leader of any source.  
  I posted to this Debate in hoping that somehow I may provoke some good thoughts, and maybe somehow those good thoughts can turn into actions to benefits someone else, and who know, maybe somewhere in the near future, my children or grand children will have better lives because they have a better world to live in. 

  Maybe you'll think I am a dreamer; but why not ?  Dreams sometime can turn into reality.

      Ethics (morality) is one of the subject that may open for all kinds of debates and arguments.  I have said in the previous message that our definition of ethics may differ sometimes.  (But that is also true with every thing else in the world).  

      I think we should leave the debate on what exactly is ethical in some specific circumtances for another time, otherwise we will be so much off the original subject.  Let's us make note that there is a code of ethics for lawyers which is enforced very seriously by the Bar and the Court.  No funny business.  Just go to any website of any Bar Association in the US you will find how serious the code of ethics is enforced. 

      BTW, many corporations have code of business ethics also.  There is also a code of ethics for doctors, accountants, engineers, etc.

        You cannot separate the leader from the system in which he leads. 
         In a system of transparency and check & balance, leaders can make as serious mistakes as anywhere else, but the effects of their mistakes are easier to contain and reversed. 
        I knew I could get a rise (in this case two) out of anh Hoanh with the lawyer example. 
        We all know that your chance of winning a case, even if you are guilty, improves greatly if you have a "good" lawyer, or better yet, a great team of lawyers.  And a "good" lawyer is one that wins.   Adhering strictly to the Code of Ethics and being ethical aren't necessarily the same thing.  How does the code of ethics address winning for a guilty client?  If it's the system's fault, not the lawyer's fault, then a lawyer who successfully defended an axe murderer is a good lawyer then?  One of the assumptions of the adversarial system is lawyers on both sides are equally capable.  HPP
