Dear Nhung,

In January 2006, I participated YMCA workcamp in Nha Trang. I've known and have collaborated VN YMCA since 2000. but January 2006 was my first workcamp with YMCA. Participants included a group of American. Most of them were over 50. Some were veterans of VN-American war. In Nha Trang we repainted the rehabilitation hospital in Hon Chong for a few days. Then we went to Tay Ninh. for some American participants ever fighted and based at Tay Ninh in 1969. I helped them find their old base. Now their base is Tra Vo People committee. Tra vo is a small village 15 km away Tay Ninh. The veteran seemed very happy when he shoed his wife his old military base.

I had some 1960s music for the veteran like: the ballad of green berret, billy don't be a hero or to sir with love and etc. It's very impressive event.

I thinkk YMCA WORK CAMP IS ONE OF THE BEST WAY FOR EXCHANGING CULTURE, MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND MANY OTHER SOCIAL VALUES EXCHANGE.

Hope we all have the same happy event with YMCA

  Dear Dieu,

Pls write to chi Ngoc Dung dlily2000 at yahoo.com or vnymca at hcm.vnn.vn for workcamp information. If you are interested, contact them ASAP because they need your concrete confirmation. In short, Vietnamese volunteers don't have to pay any fee to join these, and your role is participating into all workcamp activities with American students and helping as much as you can. :p (I don't know how to put them all together!). You can help to paint walls, carry tables, paint doors, windows, cook, or interpret for Vietnamese children and American students, etc. - mostly just enjoy it and present your interesting self among other multi-culture participants. :)

I participated in a workcamp in 2004 December with Wake Forest University for 2 weeks. We helped to build 2 classroom for Long Thanh 3 Primary School in a remoted village in Can Tho, and we brought book for the school's library. We stayed in a research station of Can Tho University where 8 girls shared one big room and we learned to live in "Dong bang song Cuu Long style" for a week. Have you attracted? :) - There were lots of mosquitoes I was into fight with them everyday. And look at the coming workcamp this time - right in the rainy season, make sure you'll get prepared. :)

We worked at site under bright sun in the daytime and we shared our impressions, our feelings, mostly jokes and laughter when we get back to the station from "work" - "Work" includes painting walls, carrying rocks, painting tables, windows, doors-etc etc-and playing with the kids coming to see you work at the site. Make sure you work really well or they'll return you home in a pig-carrier!!!

Some got really sick because of weather and food, and everything else - but we were "cool" after all.

The last 7 days we were traveling to Hoi An, Hue and Quang Binh. Uhm, that was it. Join if you can and if you want.

  Cheers,

  -nhung

PS.: Mary, I cc this to you so you can correct me if my memory has become bad. xx

  Dear Nhung,

Thanks for your shared information. I would love to do some volunteer work like this when I am back in VN this summer. However, I would really want to know more about the details of the program. Do you have any material concerning the budget, initaries, housing, characteristics... of the program. In addition, since you indicated that you have enjoyed previous experiences with the camp, would you like to share with us some of the memories and thoughts while doing the program. I think they would be very moving and interesting to us.

  Best,

  Dieu
