*"BITS 'N' PIECES" from Graham Potter:
**First, let me clarify that in referring to myself in the last Issue as the
"late" Graham Potter I meant only that I had once again demonstrated my
ongoing proclivity for tardiness and procrastination---in fact, I'm still
with you and I'm back in HCMC now!* *Departures, Farewells, and Bon Voyages
(and Thank Yous):*
*(certainly in no order of importance! They're all important . . . friends!)
John "Milky" Milkiewicz (U.S. RSO HCMC; already), Phil Wyithe (British
Consul; soon), Alfred & Sashi Beltgens (Dutch Consul and Mrs. Consul;
already), Antoine Bourbon (Gras Savoye Willis; soon I think), Robert Coleman
(Canadian Senior Trade Commissioner; soon), Ralph Flanagan (Canadian Consul;
already), Mr. Le Minh Phung (farewell forever to my oldest friend in HCMC).*
*Welcomes to Town, Congratulations (on your birthday, career move, new
posting, whatever!), etc.:*
*(again, in no particular order!) Colliers International Vietnam (back in
town again), Liberty Moore (Canadian Consul), Chris Zobrist (see July 19
CanCham Breakfast), Ajay Panot (for his well-earned HCMC Friendship Union
medal), Daniel Francey (CBRE), Chris Murray and Jeff Farquhar (U.S. RSO and
Assistant RSO HCMC), Colin Farah (International SOS), Beat Klarer (GM,
Windsor Plaza Hotel), John Wales (British Consul), Sanjeev Chowdhury (on
receiving the Canadian Foreign Service Officer Award for 2006), Ralf Mattaes
(for TSN's 10 Years in Vietnam and for his fascinating recent article in
VIR: "10 Future Trends that will have a Major Impact on Vietnam's Economy
and Consumers"), ANZ Bank (for its 10 Years in Vietnam), Chris Schuster
(Hideaway), Ayumi Matsuzaka (visiting Artist from Berlin on a bedsheet
mission---see more below), Ms. Nicolette Temple on her 4th birthday.*
*The East Meets West Foundation's 2005 Annual Report is now available and
it's interesting, gratifying reading! Titled, "New Directions in Vietnam",
some of the statistics are impressive and demonstrate how "EMW" truly is
meeting its mission: "to partner with the people of Vietnam to build a
peaceful and prosperous future" through learning, healing and health.
Beneficiaries
in 2005 included: 91,500 at Medical Care Facilities; 16,159 in Clean Water
Programs; 10,948 through Pediatric Health; 8,881 through Childhood Learning;
and 478 through the ADAPT program to Prevent Human Trafficking. Yes,
impressive, but that doesn't mean the job's done yet! It's an ongoing,
non-stop mission so please consider supporting it.* For a copy of the
Annual Report and for further information contact Robin King Austin or Rad
Kivette at telephone (08) 290 7372/290 7374, mobile 0909273850 (Robin),
e-mail* *eastmeetswest_vn at yahoo.com . Website www.eastmeetswest.org . *The
Bedsheet Artist:* I* met Ms. Ayumi Matsuzaka, Artist, last night. Her few
months in HCMC visiting from Berlin will certainly be (if I understand
correctly) devoted to a rather different and interesting project: lending
selected individuals a bedsheet and asking them to record their dreams while
on/under it for a week, then presenting the results. I'll try to find out
more, I promise! In the meantime, Ayumi can no doubt explain her artwork
better than I can!* contact at ayumi-matsuzaka.com . *My lord, she gets
around! Rachel Godley, ex-CanCham Hanoi intern (and a very creative and
inspired one), has been globe-trotting since leaving the North (of
Vietnam). First India. Just now her missive from I'm not quite sure where
tells great tales of Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, giraffes, waterfalls,
tickets to Russia ending up as tickets to Leeds, Yemen, and much more! All
great fun, these humorous messages! If you want to wish her well, or find
out what she's up to today (or where she really is), feel free to contact
her and ask to be put on her rattling-good e-mail travelogue: *
godleyr at yahoo.ca* .* * No doubt her back issues are available too!* *Contests
(Internal):* *This one's mixed with an apology!* *While I was away I
received some notes from friends asking* *why we had sent them 12(!) of the
same Upcoming Events, eh?! Issue 12! Usually I receive complaints about
people being deleted from the mailing list, so perhaps the 80 or so folks
who did get 12 each should be happy we didn't stop sending it to them---no,
no, only joking! We regret any inconvenience caused to you and we HOPE that
this Issue 13 arrives in your Inbox only once! So . . . just in case we
still don't get it right, we're starting a contest! The winner will be the
(un)fortunate recipient who can prove they were beset upon by the most
UEe messages
per issue! (It's a very good prize, too!)* *F&B Update: Madhu and Olivia
are still finalizing our new section devoted to Food & Drink listings.
It'll be part of an August issue, I think. It's looking very good and the
sponsor response has been excellent so far.* *"Starting in August, 2006,
suites in the brand-new Avalon Apartments will be available! Located at 53
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Q.1, HCMC, it's a central landmark with easy access to
commercial and government offices, shopping and entertainment. Contact Ms.
Hoang Thi Bich Huong, mobile 0908428218, e-mail* huong.hoang at avalon.com.vn,
