Dear CACC,
I have this exciting news that I can't wait to share it with you all right away.
There is this blind young lady I would just call "Candy" here for
privacy reason. Her parents are my friends. She is really my
inspiration. She is about 22 and has just finished a bachelor degree
and has obtained a Teaching Certificate to teach in Braille (the
language for the blind). As I understand, that is the most difficult
teaching certificate to gain.
She was OK when she was younger, but some eye disease slowly took her
sight away until she was totally blind. Two months ago, some weird
thing happened with her left eye that it made her head hurt so much
that the doctors had to remove that eye. Then she had to had a
prosthesis eye put in place for that. I met her shortly afterward,
and she appeared to be so completely calm and happy like she was. Not
a word or a little movement in her body language to indicate that she
had just endured another catastrophe. Her composure was so amazingly
peaceful and natural that I said: "Candy I want you to know that you
are my inspiration. And I just don't' say that to be nice. I really
mean it." She said, "Yes, I know you mean it." (I guess she could
judge from my voice).
Anyway, several weeks ago, I visited her home for her younger
brother's high school graduation party and she was trying to lift me
off the ground (we were in some kind of joke I forgot), I said:
"Candy, I would love to teach you Ju Jitsu so that you can throw me to
the ground easier. I think you would be very good at Ju Jitsu. Ju
Jitsu relies a lot on close contact and feeling the movements of your
opponent. Since you can't see, you would develop your sense of
feeling to the ultimate degree. I would love to teach you so that I
have to master the art of feeling myself, because I will have to
master that in order to teach you effectively. And if you take
classes, that would give me a strong motivation to be in the class
every day to teach you myself, because usually when I am busy on
business I don't come to the class at all." She said, "Sounds
interesting. I would consider that seriously. I think I would like
it."
Then I talked to her parents, and they both were amazed with the idea
and loved to see it happen. I told them I would love to train Candy
into a champion. Then today her dad told me that Candy had decided to
learn Ju Jitsu and her dad may also join the class to condition his
body for health purposes (and, I guess, to encourage his daughter).
So look like I am going to have a very special student who would
inspire me teach and to come up with lots of new ideas and techniques
that will work well for her. Isn't that fascinating? I can't wait
till she signs up.
Have a great day!
Hoanh
