Environment Spotlight: Bring container, get a discount

FU Sek Sue, 50, dishes out tasty greens at her restaurant in
Kuala Terengganu during lunch-time.

But lately, she has been trying to serve a "going green"
consciousness to her customers. She offers those who bring
their own containers for takeaways a discount of between 50
sen and RM1.

She hopes this will, in a small way, help reduce the use of
polystyrene containers.

Fus restaurant is one of five here which offer such discounts
as part of a campaign by the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merits Society
Malaysia.

The head of the societys Terengganu chapter, Fan Leng Leng,
said the society had been involved in recycling projects for
the past eight years. "Our motto is changing waste to gold and
gold to love, where the money obtained from recycling can go
to the needy."

Fu said: "The discount on food does not hurt a bit. At the end
of the day, this campaign benefits me, my customers and the
environment. It is a good idea."

However, she said, the response was lukewarm. But she is not
giving up hope that it will catch on.

I have never heard of World Environment Day, but I do recycle
occasionally. The responsibility of protecting the environment
rests with the individual.
