Subject: FW: Purple, Grey, and Green: Infusing Sustainability into the UST
Curriculum. July 16-18, 2007

Dear E...:

Per our conversation and your announcement, attached is a paragraph of what
I intend to do for the subject that was emailed to PN earlier. Please let me
know if you may like to see anything else.

Another item that I already talked about at the workshop if possible is to
have all the computers at UST (~ 3,000 ?) on standby when not in use. This
should save a lot of electricity (more than 90 % when on standby ?), and I
do this regularly on my PC's at home. Yes, it's a bit inconvenient that it
takes 2 clicks (~ 20 seconds) to command my PC to be on standby and about
another 60 seconds with 1 click to wake it up. This feature could be done
systematically through the school's computer network.

Again, thank you much for the subject workshop.

Thomas Vu

Dear Ms. PA:

Per our phone conversation a minute ago, this is to register for the
subject.

A reason for my interest in taking the subject seminar, besides from being

green to our environment, is to assist my students and my professional
industry to

follow the guidelines of Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)

Directive along with other green initiatives. RoHS information is available
at

 <http://www.rohs.gov.uk/> http://www.rohs.gov.uk/,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RoHS> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RoHS, etc.

Please let me know if i'm missing anything.

Thanks.

Subject: Ecological Footprints

Dear All,

For anyone who is interested, I've attached the short Powerpoint
presentation I gave on Monday. The links I showed are on the last slide. If
anyone would like any guidance on navigating these links or on the
ecological aspects of their content, I'd be glad to help.

Regards,

SKE

Dear Summer Seminar Participants,

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you next week for some great
discussions about nature, environment, and sustainability!

We will begin at 9:00 in 201 JRC next Monday, July 16..

I have attached a draft agenda. Please don't print it out! I will have a
copy of the final agenda for each of you on Monday.

If you haven't already done so, please pick up your readings in your campus
mail so you are armed and ready for Monday.

If you have changed your mind and would like to join us on the Tues a.m.
canoe adventure, PLEASE speak up now or forever hold your peace.

Please remember to bring any books you'd like to let people browse.

I'm probably forgetting something.

Thanks! E...

Dear Summer Seminar Participants,

I'm really looking forward to spending time with you thinking and talking
about sustainability!

Here are the basic readings for you to tackle prior to the seminar in July:

*	Uhl, C., Developing Ecological Consciousness

Ch. 2: Cultivating Awareness (Feel free to read more than Ch. 2!), pp. 33-62

*	Orr, D., Earth in Mind

Ch. 16: Educating for the Long Haul, pp.104-111

Ch. 19 Designing Minds, pp. 122-127

*	Leopold, A. A Sand County Almanac

July, pp. 41-50

August, pp. 51-52

The Land Ethic, pp. 201-226

*	Louv, R. Last Child in the Woods

Ch. 1: Gifts of Nature, pp. 7-14

Ch. 5: A Life of the Senses, pp.54-69

*	Essential Catholic Social Thought

Section Six: Human work on God's Earth part 2. A Catholic Environmental
Ethic, pp. 119-126

*	Please work through EarthScore: Your Personal Environmental Audit
Guide

*	Also, please search the web for pre-existing examples of integrating
nature/environment/sustainability into courses similar to yours. A good
starting point is:

            http://www.scienceandsociety.emory.edu/piedmont/curriculum.htm

Additionally, in the spirit of sustainability please bring the following
items with you to the seminar:

*	Your own ceramic mug/metal thermos/reusable water bottle (depending
on your beverage preferences)
*	Your own cloth napkin
*	Recycled/reused paper for notes
*	Consider walking/biking/carpooling/public transportation for the
three days of the seminar.

Please e-mail me or call if you have any questions.

Sincerely, E.

Slide 1: Sustainable Development

.".balancing the fullfilment of human needs with protection of the natural
environment, so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but in
the indefinite future. Wikipedia
.".development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs" Bruntland Commission
."Globally we are not even meeting the needs of the present let alone
considering the needs of future generations." UK Government

Slide 2: Environmental Sustainability
.
".the ability of the environment to continue to function properly
indefinitely.
.".requires that human activity only uses nature's resources at a rate at
which they can be replenished naturally.
."Theoretically, the long term result of environmental degradation would be
local environments that are no longer able to sustain human populations to
any degree. Such degradation on a global scale could imply extinction for
humanity." Wikipedia

Slide 3: Measuring Environmental Impacts

.Ecological Footprint
-The amount of land needed per person to produce the resources we use and to
absorb the wastes we generate
.Available Ecological Capacity
-The amount of land available per person to produce the resources we use and
to absorb the wastes we generate
.If AEC < EF we are living unsustainably

Slide 4: Resources and Wastes

.Resources Used
-Food (agricultural and fisheries)
-Water
-Wood for construction
-Wood for fuel
-Minerals, oil and other non-renewables

.Wastes Generated
-Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
-Sewage
-Garbage
-Nutrients
-Herbicides
-Pesticides
-Industrial pollutants

Slide 5: Footprint Analysis: Recent Improvements

.Incorporation of oceans and other biomes as carbon sequestration sinks,
rather than just forest land.
.Incorporation of the Earth's entire surface in ecological capacity
estimates, rather than just the Global Agricultural Ecological Zone.
.Uses Net Primary Productivity rather than agricultural productivity in
ecological capacity estimates.
.Allocates a proportion (13.4%) of the Earth's land surface for preservation
of other species.

Slide 6: Footprint Analysis: Improvements Needed

.Establishment of sustainability thresholds for non-agricultural land,
particularly forests and fisheries.
.Better analysis of the needs of other species.
.Incorporation of water use.
.Incorporation of the effects of greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide.

.Incorporation of the effects of environmental pollutants and toxins.

Slide 7: Ecological footprint in relation to available ecological capacity

Slide 8: Human population growth

Slide 9: The Main Factors Affecting Your Ecological Footprint

.Heating costs of your home
.Size of home
.House or apartment building
.Number of inhabitants
.Transport
.Daily mileage
.Fuel efficiency of vehicle
.Car pooling
.Amount of aircraft travel
.Diet
.Percentage of animal-based food
.Percentage of locally purchased food
.

Slide 10: The Size of Your Ecological Footprint

.Average for U.S.A.
24 acres per person
.Western European Countries
14 acres per person
.Contribution from a heavily animal-based diet (animal food with almost
every meal)
5.64 acres
.Contribution from a completely vegetarian diet
2.28 acres
.Difference
3.36 acres (15% of total; 25-35% of reduction to European levels )
.
Slide 11: Your Ecological Footprint

.Actions with similar effects
-Two couples living in one house rather than two houses
-A single person living in a multistorey apartment rather than a house
-If you drive 10,000 - 15,000 miles per year, buying a hybrid car (50 mpg)
instead of an S.U.V. (< 15 mpg)
-Reducing your number of cross-country round-trip flights by 5-6 per year
