Dear Uncle Ho: A Communist 'Spy' in Little Saigon Writes Home
Viet Weekly, Commentary,
Tommy Bruin, May 31, 2004

Dear Uncle Ho,

I am writing this letter to update you on the present situation of the Vietnamese community based on my most recent observations this past week in Orange County, Calif. As you already know, I have been given the assignment by the Vietnamese Communist government to live in Little Saigon and to report back any findings that may benefit the Party's political and ideological efforts.

Reports from Little Saigon are crucial, because it is considered the "free capital of Vietnam outside of Vietnam." Therefore, it is the Party's top priority to infiltrate, subdue, coerce, and overtake Little Saigon. The mission is to mastermind a "domino effect," as part of that "domino theory" that was so famously coined by the free democratic world, to keep the overseas Vietnamese complacent and off guard.

I believe you will find this report to be most encouraging, as it relates to our current propaganda efforts against the free and democratic Vietnamese communities around the world. However, as my observations are in the favor of the Party, I most sincerely advise that we take extreme caution not to awaken a sleeping giant. The Little Saigon community has the monumental potential to destroy any and all of our attempts to unite all Vietnamese as loyal Party members of our beloved Communist Vietnam. On that note, please allow me this opportunity to inform you of what I have observed.

On April 30, I attended a ceremony in Freedom Park where approximately 700 Vietnamese gathered to honor and remember their fallen South Vietnamese soldiers. The Vietnamese here have called this ceremony Black April or "Ngay Quoc Han" to commemorate the day that a free and democratic Saigon fell into our tyrannical hands.

I have to admit, Uncle Ho, that I found their efforts to be quite admirable. They displayed so much pride and honor saluting that yellow flag with three red stripes that I too, found myself standing at attention admiring it.

Although you may be upset with me, it was very difficult for me to not have empathy for them. I watched a performance by young Vietnamese students who reenacted the disheartening plight of the Vietnamese boat refugees. I was as deeply moved as the other Vietnamese around me.

I witnessed and felt the tears of sorrow of the crowd on this cool April evening. Sorry, Uncle Ho- it's difficult not to respect the honorable and righteous intentions of the Vietnamese here. Their relentless determination to bring freedom and democracy to Vietnam is hard to ignore.

Rest assured, Uncle Ho, our dictatorial grasp still can be tightly wrapped around them. As commendable as their efforts are, the civic participation in their community is extremely low. Approximately 700 people attended this gathering out of an estimated 250,000 Vietnamese who live in Southern California. That's less than 1 percent of the population!

It seems the majority of the Vietnamese population of "the free capital of Vietnam" has become complacent with the atrocities we committed against their families, friends and ancestors. They don't seem to mind that the Party's dictatorship and your political ideology is simply an illusion to mask our corruption and greed.

It seems they have lost interest in challenging our cruel methodologies that deny the very basic human rights and religious freedoms. Could it be that they have turned a blind eye to the fact that the poorer and more vulnerable the people of Vietnam become, the wealthier and more powerful our Party is? Whatever the case may be, Uncle Ho, it seems that our bullying tactics and blatant propaganda will find very little opposition.

But as we gradually claim our victory over this community of free Vietnamese, I advise that the Party take steps not to fuel the fervor of anti-communist sentiments. Let's remember the embarrassing defeat we endured in December of 1999 when tens of thousands of Vietnamese marched the streets of Bolsa Avenue to protest the display of your picture in comrade Tran Truong's video store.

We haven't witnessed that much solidarity and conviction against our barbaric regime since. But we cannot underestimate the ability of a few democratic troublemakers to start it again. If these few honorable advocates of freedom are able to unite this community and incite active participation on a larger scale, our Party will face destruction of epic proportions.

I apologize if I have offended you, Uncle Ho, but should Little Saigon and the other free Vietnamese communities around the world unite and wage a collective political war against us, defeat would be inevitable. I do not mean to undermine your heartless cunning and trickery, but it is a simple fact. United, their voices are louder than ours. United, their conviction is deeper than ours. United, they are stronger than us. We cannot ignore what has been repeated over and over again throughout history. Eventually freedom and democracy will triumph over evil.

Your nephew,
Fading Star
