Vietnam's prime minister, Phan Van Khai, has urged parliament to step up the battle against corruption, which he says is the greatest threat to communist rule.
Mr Khai told the National Assembly that corruption and theft of state property were the root causes of the collapse of the Soviet Union, and warned the same could happen to Vietnam if action was not taken.
He made the comments in a rare televised question and answer session.
Vietnam ranked 102nd of 146 nations last year in a corruption survey conducted by international corruption watchdog Transparency International.
The government has been cracking down on corruption following complaints by foreign investors that graft is a major hindrance to doing business in the country.
Mr Khai says the government will spend $US445 million next year to raise salaries of state employees to help reduce corruption.
