The US ambassador to Vietnam has criticised Hanoi for
its treatment of the leaders of an outlawed Buddhist
church.

Michael Marine, who took up his post in September,
says the government's policy towards senior monks from
the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam could trigger
repercussions.

He says the United States wants Vietnam to live up to
its commitments on human rights and religious freedom,
made in 1991 when it signed on to the UN covenant on
civil and political rights.

Ambassador Marine expressed concern that the deputy
head of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, was
prevented from visiting the church's elderly patriarch
who was hospitalised last week.

Both were placed under de facto house arrest in
October last year.
