Diplomat says VN firms should eye western China
Vietnamese companies should seek to penetrate Western China as a gateway to
enter the vast Chinese market as the region holds great potentials for
development following new policies by the Chinese government, a diplomat
said.
Wang Longhtf, Chinese economic and commercial consul in HCMC, told a meeting
with Vietnamese enterprises last week that opportunities are opening up as
China is bringing out policies to develop its western region.
"The Chinese government is exerting every effort to develop the west and
offering incentive policies to attract investors and goods makers into this
region," he said at the meeting held by the HCMC Investment and Trade
Promotion Center (ITPC).
China's western region was now less developed than the east but was an ideal
market for Vietnamese goods as it has a large population and shares many
development factors with Vietnam, Longhu said.
At present, nine provinces in the western region covering eight million
square kilometers account for more than half of China's total area and
one-third of the country's more than 1.3 billion population, according to
ITPC.
Vu Kim Hanh, deputy director of the center, shared Longhu's view and said
that Vietnamese enterprises should enter Western China to capitalize on the
incentives the Chinese government offered to investors there until 2012.
Hanh said such large western provinces as Yunan and Guangxi held great
potentials and needed goods imported from abroad.
So far, many makers of high-quality Vietnamese goods have successfully
tapped China's western market. They include Biti's, Phuoc Thinh Textile and
T & T Shoe.
Hanh said the success of the companies proved that Vietnamese had many
opportunities to boost their outbound sales in China, particularly its
western part.
Dao Ngoc Vinh, head of the Asia-Pacific Department at the Ministry of Trade,
said western Chinese consumers strongly liked Vietnamese tropical fruits,
seafood and rubber.
The policy China is applying in the western provinces, especially Yunan and
Guangxi, was a good opportunity for China and Vietnam to spur two-way trade,
which stands at US$3.2 billion at the moment.
The figure the two countries have targeted is US$5 billion in 2005.
